Two Tank System
Two Tank Vegoil Systems
Two Tank System
- Two Tank Tank Vegoil System - This system uses an additional tank to store and supply the vegetable oil. The engine is first started on diesel or biodiesel and then engine coolant or the cars electrical system may be used to heat the vegetable oil tank and / or fuel delivery lines. Once the vegetable oil is up to operating temperature (typically after a few minutes on diesel) a solenoid switch is operated to change the fuel delivery to vegoil. A few minutes before stopping it is neccessary to switch back to diesel to flush the system of veg-oil and prime the fuel system with diesel for the next start up cycle.
- Advantages of the Two Tank Vegoil System - This system works well in colder (below freezing) climates. There is a built in redundancy factor with the two tank vegoil system as there is always the option of flicking a switch and running on mineral diesel. Cost is likely to be less than the single tank systems available. There is a greater choice of supplier and several different systems available.
- Disadvantages of the Two Tank Vegoil System - The two tank vegoil system is a more intricate system with more working parts than a single tank system. The additional valves, fuel lines, and switches for instance give more room for failures and malfunctions. There is also the issue of engine coolant being used to warm the cold vegetable oil - contamination of the vegoil with water (coolant) would be disastrous for the engine. Storage space is lost in the vehicle due to the fitting of an additional fuel tank. On short trips because of the need to purge vegetable oil from the system with diesel it may be impractical to use this system at all.
